Mnozí vám jistě budou vyprávět o věži.
O tajemném elegantním obru bdícím nad městem. Z mnoha míst města je vidět její silueta jako maják nad mořem střech.
Každý, kdo jde kolem, vnímá její přítomnost. Věž se nevtírá, nekřičí, ale pořád tu je – za stromy, za střechami, na protějším břehu řeky. Její přítomnost se pomalu stala stejně samozřejmou, jako silueta Hradčan.
Kdo se prochází po vltavských nábřežích může vidět zapadající slunce odrážet se od její koruny. V těch chvílích se člověku skoro zdá, jako by vrchol věže planul jasným plamenem.
Snad každému vrtalo hlavou, co se vlastně ve věži skrývá, co zakrývá její mlčící tvář, její prázdná nenarušená fasáda. A mnoho lidí jistě poznalo, že věž je jako mudrc – mlčí, protože ví – nese vše, co v našich zemích za poslední staletí lidé uložili do knih.
Plášť věže je tvořen mozaikou historických zdících prvků z městských depozitářů, které tvoří od země k vrcholu přechod od velkých kamenných prvků až po moderní, drobné a lehké bílé cihly.
Je tu ale víc. Národní knihovna není jen věž, ale především příjemné místo, kam jít studovat.
Místo, kam lidé za knihami chodí je čtyřpatrová budova u paty věže, v níž je příjemné rozptýlené světlo a přiměřený klid.
Jsem přesvědčen že ideální pozicí pro novou národní knihovnu je Těšnovské nábřeží u Hlávkova mostu.
Střetává se tu linie nábřeží (se svými významnými institucemi) s linií severojižní magistrály – pražské Ringstrasse. Na protějším břehu řeky je plánovaná nová budova filharmonie a v bezprostřední blízkosti jsou dvě nádraží a přestupní stanice metra. Tato pozice je ale bohužel již obsazena hotelem a dvěma kancelářskými budovami.
Je možné zbourat fungující budovy a na jejich místě postavit jinou, zdánlivě společensky významnější? Na tuto otázku jsem si nedokázal odpovědět kladně. Na tom, že je těšnovské nábřeží ideální, ale trvám.
Proto jsem se rozhodl položit si úlohu jinak:
Co kdyby území mezi Negrelliho viaduktem a severojižní magistrálou vypadalo úplně jinak? Nezískala by Praha novou kvalitu?
Vstup do nové Národní knihovny vede z velkorysé piazzetty, která tvoří předmostí Hlávkova mostu, je přímo propojená s vltavským nábřežím a je vyvrcholením stromořadí jdoucího od náměstí před muzeem hlavního města Prahy.
Nová budova národní knihovny se skládá ze tří částí – dominantní věže a dvou „altánů“ u její paty.
Ve věži se nachází veškeré sklady knihovních fondů, v altánech veřejná část knihovny a pracovní prostory pro knihovníky, protože národní knihovna je především místem ochrany a péče o knihy.
Na střechách altánů se nachází terasy se střešními zahradami, na střeše věže vyhlídka a shromažďovací prostor pod otevřeným nebem.
Srdcem knihovny je pak „okulus“ – velkorysá aula ve spodní části věže, v níž je možné pořádat velké kulturní akce – výstavy, koncerty, galavečery. V běžném dni ovšem tento prostor slouží především jako komunikační uzel celé budovy. Vede do něj hlavní vstup z piazzetty i z parku a z něj potom hlavní vstupy do veřejné i knihovnické části. Pobytová schodiště v této hale zároveň poskytují oddechový prostor.
New building for National Library of the Czech Republic
I’m convinced that the ideal location for the new building for National Library is the Těšnov riverside near the Hlávka bridge. It’s the place where the line of Vltava riverside (where are situated the most important public institutions) meets the line of the major north-south road of Prague, which has been build on the line of the former fortification („Prague’s Ringstrasse“). On the opposite side of the river lies the location for the future new concert hall. There are two railway stations and a transition metro station in the immediate proximity.
But there’s a problem – the location is not empty. There is a hotel and two office buildings „blocking“ the area.
Is it possible to destroy three functioning buildings and to build a new – seemingly more socially important one on their place?
I couldn’t find a positive answer to this question. I’m nevertheless convinced that it is the ideal location.
Therefore I decided to define the question differently: What if the area between Negrelli’s viaduct and the north-south „magistrála“ looked completely different? Wouldn’t this part of Prague gain a new quality?
Many will talk about the tower. About the mysterious elegant giant that watches over the city. There are many places in the city from which you can see the silhouette of the tower as a lighthouse above the sea of roofs.
Everyone who goes by feels its presence. The tower doesn’t inflict itself, it doesn’t shout. But it is there – behind the trees, behind the rooftops, on the other side of the river. It’s presence has slowly become as clear as the skyline of Prague Castle.
Who walks along the riverbanks of Vltava can see the sunset reflect from the crown. It’s those moments when you can nearly come to the idea that the top of the tower shines with bright flame.
Nearly to everyone has come to mind the question: what hides in the tower – what lies behind the quiet face, behind the clear untouched facade. And many have come to the realisation that the tower is as a wise man – it is silent, because it knows. The tower carries everything that people in this land have put to books in the last century.
But there is more. The National Library isn’t just the tower, but also a pleasant place where to study.
The place where people come to see the books is a four stories high building at the foot of the tower in which there is diffused light and adequate calm. You can study in the great study hall with the view of the tree crowns and the river or on many smaller or bigger places that are hidden between the book shelves. If you are to tired of reading and concentrating, you can go up to the roof garden and watch the river, relax in one of the sofas on the ground floor or go out throgh the eastern entrance and lie on the green grass in the park.
The piazetta in front of the library creates a noble bridgehead to the Hlávka bridge and is connected to the riverside, the park behind is a fresh relaxing place.
The new building of the National Library consists of three parts – dominant tower and two look-alike „garden houses“. In the tower there are all the deposits of the library fonds, in the „garden houses“ the public parts of the library and the office part for the librarians, because the library is as much a place for care for the books as it is a place to see them. On the roofs of the „garden houses“ there are roof terraces with gardens, on the top of the tower is an outlook gallery and a noble gathering place under the open sky.
The heart of the library is the „oculus“ – a generous hall in the bottom part of the tower, in which i tis possible to organise large events such as concerts, balls or exhibitions. In a common day is this place a communicational knot of the whole building. Both main entrances lead to this space and the entrance to the public part of the library i salso situated here. The wide staircases in the „oculus“ can be also used as relaxing places.
The skin of the tower consists of a mosaic of old historical wall elements from the city deposits, which create (from foot to top) a gradient from the old stone parts to the modern light white bricks. The public part and the part for librarians has a double skin with a trombe wall effect. The double skin consists of a curtain wall on the inner side and of a glassconcrete layer on the outer side which is hanging between the concrete columns of a giant order.
The bottom part of the building has a concrete frame with concrete cores, which allows a flexibility of the interior layout. The tower is designed as a concrete superstructure supported by four huge cores in which are also situated all the lifts and staircases.
